As I was in the process of making up sample dresses for The Shirt Project I was very struck by the combination of blues as the sat next to one another on the wall, reminding me of an exhibition I had either seen or heard about.

This set me on a Google search, thankfully to be reminded of the Boro tradition of continually patching garments, increasing their lifespan, in some cases for generations, as the timeline of a family history is intricately stitched into the item.


From when a garment is made it is minded and not disposed off, carefully patched, as it is “too good to waste”.
